خردنامه اسکندری / Kheradnameh-ye Eskandari - The Book of Alexander's Wisdom

خردنامه اسکندری (The Book of Alexander's Wisdom)

Kheradnameh-ye Eskandari is the seventh and final mathnavi within Jami's Haft Awrang. It recounts the deeds of Alexander (Sekandar) as a mirror for princes, interweaving philosophical counsel attributed to Greek sages such as Aristotle, Plato, and Socrates.

Its closing movement is the ندبه حکیمان (Lament of the Sages): a sequence of sections in which a series of philosophers speak in turn over Alexander's coffin, each drawing a moral on the vanity of worldly conquest and the certainty of death. The individual laments (for example, the laments of the second through the tenth sage) belong to this work as its sections, rather than attaching directly to the whole collection.
