خردنامه اسکندری / Khiradnama-yi Iskandari (The Book of Wisdom of Alexander)

Khiradnama-yi Iskandari (The Book of Wisdom of Alexander)

This is the seventh and final masnavi of Jami's collection Haft Awrang. It narrates the life, campaigns, and death of Alexander the Great (Iskandar), framed as a philosophical book of wisdom drawing on the Greek sages. Its closing movement is a sequence of laments (ندبه) spoken by ten sages gathered around Alexander's coffin, each meditating on the transience of worldly power, treasure, and life. The individual sections titled Lament of the First Sage, Second Sage, and so on through the Tenth Sage all belong to this work and share its structure and themes.

Structurally this work sits between the whole collection (Haft Awrang) and its individual numbered sections (بخش), so the sections of the sages' laments are best understood as parts of this single masnavi rather than as direct pieces of the seven-part collection.
