لیلی و مجنون / Layla and Majnun (Jami's Masnavi within Haft Awrang)

Layla and Majnun

لیلی و مجنون (Layla and Majnun) is the sixth of the seven masnavis that together form Jami's Haft Awrang. Following the tradition of Nizami and Amir Khusraw, it retells the Arab love-story of Qays (Majnun) and Layla, reworked as a spiritual allegory of longing and self-annihilation in the beloved.

Within the narrative Jami inserts framing and didactic passages — including counsels addressed to his own son on the pursuit of knowledge and perfection. Individual section-poems (بخش) such as Section 57 belong under this masnavi, which sits as an intermediate container between the whole Haft Awrang collection and its constituent sections.
