لیلی و مجنون / Layli and Majnun (the sixth masnavi of Jami's Haft Awrang)

Layli and Majnun (لیلی و مجنون)

Layli and Majnun is the sixth of the seven masnavis that make up Jami's Haft Awrang (completed 1484). It retells the classic Arabic-Persian romance of the doomed lovers Qays (Majnun) and Layli, reframing their earthly passion as a Sufi allegory of the soul's yearning for the Divine Beloved. Like the other masnavis in the anthology, it opens with prefatory sections of divine unity (tawhid) and praise of the Prophet (na't) before the narrative proper begins. The individual sections (بخش) of this poem belong beneath this masnavi rather than directly under the whole Haft Awrang collection.
