لیلی و مجنون / Layli and Majnun — the Sixth Masnavi of Jami's Haft Awrang

Layli and Majnun (لیلی و مجنون)

Layli and Majnun is the sixth of the seven narrative poems (masnavis) that together make up Jami's Haft Awrang (Seven Thrones). It retells the classic Arabic-Persian love story of Qays (who becomes known as Majnun) and Layla, reworked as a Sufi allegory in which overwhelming earthly passion becomes a ladder toward divine love.

The poem unfolds as a sequence of numbered sections (بخش) — for example, the episode in which Majnun leaves behind the she-camel that keeps returning to its calf and carrying him away from Layla. These sections are episodes within this single poem and belong beneath it, rather than being attached directly to the whole Haft Awrang collection. Understanding that these sections form one continuous narrative work is a prerequisite for reading any individual section in context.
