لیلی و مجنون (جامی) / Leyli o Majnun by Jami

Leyli o Majnun

لیلی و مجنون is the sixth of the seven narrative masnavis that make up Jami's Haft Awrang. Composed in the late 15th century, it retells in Persian verse the classic Arabian love story of Qays (Majnun) and Layla, tracing Majnun's descent into love-madness, his withdrawal into the wilderness among wild animals, his poetry, and the deaths of the two lovers.

The poem is divided into numbered sections (بخش) that narrate the story episode by episode. These sections are the individual learning objects that belong beneath this work rather than directly under the whole Haft Awrang collection. Understanding this masnavi as a distinct narrative work is a prerequisite for placing any of its individual sections (such as the episodes of the Bedouin visiting Majnun) in their proper structural and narrative context.
