لیلی و مجنون (جامی) / Leyli va Majnun (Jami)

Leyli va Majnun (لیلی و مجنون) is one of the seven narrative masnavis that together make up Jami's Haft Awrang. Composed in rhyming couplets, it retells the classic Arabic love story of Qays (called Majnun, the love-maddened) and Layla, tracing Majnun's descent into love-madness, his withdrawal into the wilderness among wild animals and gazelles, his encounters with figures such as the poet Kathir (Kuthayyir), the Caliph, and a devoted Bedouin, and the tragic separation and death of the two lovers. Within the prerequisite structure of Haft Awrang, this masnavi is the immediate container for its individual numbered sections (بخش) — including the episodes of the meadow of gazelles, the freed gazelle, and Majnun's death — rather than those sections attaching directly to the whole seven-poem collection.
