Section 73 - A Tale by Way of Allegory

Original content

English translation

Two foolish men, opening their tongues in vanity, Fell into prejudice and foolish babbling. One of them turned to the other and said, 'O you who are singular in torment and ruin! Every insult in this world that has ever been Uttered by the tongues of the elite or the common, Or has not been uttered, yet is such that One might defile one's tongue with it— I have gathered them all inside a sack, As a gift for a tedious soul like you.' The other one also opened his tongue in vanity, Hurling abuses and speaking indecently. Everything he said out of malice and hatred, The first foul-mouthed speaker replied to him: 'All of these are already enclosed within my sack; How long will you keep spending from my sack? When you set your tongue in motion, Bring forth something that is not in the sack!' Likewise, whatever the intellect, illusion, or imagination May depict of the nature of evil and misfortune, The title of 'poet' in the custom of the people of our time Without a doubt encompasses it. Though lentils are beyond possibility, All of it is enclosed within that sack. Although poetry is not pleasing to my heart, What a strange condition it is that I have no escape from it. The saying 'Barley is eaten, yet it is despised' Has become a proverb among the Arabs. Today, I am the subject of that proverb; Today, I recite that proverb for myself. I find fault with poetry, yet I compose it; I criticize the musk, yet I smell its fragrance. I cast reproach upon poetry through poetry itself, And by means of it, I break its value and worth. What can I do? For this is in my nature, And from eternity past, this has been my destiny. For this purpose have they created me, And toward this have they drawn me. Whatever the Truth has made a collar for my neck, How can I pull my neck away from it?'
