بخش ۱۷۲ - حکایت بر سبیل تمثیل / Section 172 - A Tale by Way of Allegory

خسروی را که بود فرزندان
وقت رفتن رسید ازین زندان

هر یکی را به حیله کاری و فن
داد تیری که زور کن بشکن

یک به یک را چو قوت تن بود
زور کردن همان شکستن بود

تیرها دسته کرد دیگر بار
نه فزون و نه کم ازان به شمار

نتوانست کس که زور زند
دسته تیر را به هم شکند

گفت باشید اگر به هم هم پشت
بشکند زود پشت خصم درشت

ور بدارید از آنچه گفتم دست
زودتان اوفتد ز خصم شکست

یک یک انگشت اگر دهی به کسی
که بود زور او کم از تو بسی

تابد انگشت تو چنان به شتاب
که در آن تافتن رود ز تو تاب

ور به هر پنج تا بیش پنجه
دستش از تافتن کنی رنجه

جمع را هست قوت معتاد
که نباشد میسر از آحاد

English translation

A king who had several sons, When his time to depart from this prison arrived, To each one, through a clever method and skill, He gave an arrow, saying: 'Exert your strength and break it.' Since each of them possessed bodily strength, Exerting strength was the same as breaking it. He bundled the arrows together once more, Neither more nor less than that same number. No one was able, despite exerting strength, To break that bundle of arrows together. He said: 'If you support one another, The back of the formidable enemy will soon be broken. But if you abandon what I have said, You will quickly suffer defeat from the enemy. If you offer your fingers one by one to someone, Even if his strength is much less than yours, He will twist your finger so quickly That in that twisting your power will fade. But if with all five you form a fist, You will weary his hand from twisting yours. The collective possesses an inherent strength That is not possible for individuals.'
