بخش ۳۱ - قیام نمودن ابسال به دایگی سلامان و دامن بر زدن در پرورش آن پاکیزه دامان / Section 31 - Absal Undertaking the Wet-Nursing of Salaman and Girding Her Loins in the Upbringing of That Pure-Hearted One

Original content

English translation

When the king chose Absal as a wet-nurse, So that she might bring the auspicious Salaman Into the lap of her benevolence, And nurture him from the moisture of her breast. When her eye fell upon Salaman, From that glance, a rent fell in her skirt (she fell passionately in love). She became soul-enamored by the grace of his essence; Like a pearl, she enclosed him in a golden cradle. In contemplating the face of that heart-illuminator, Night's sleep and day's peace departed from her. From morning till night, her diligence and effort Were in the tying and untying of his cradle. Sometimes she would wash his body with musk and rosewater, Sometimes she would feed him sugar dissolved in pure honey. The love of that moon-faced baby settled so deeply in her soul That she closed her loving eyes to everyone but him. Had it been possible for her, without any doubt, She would have placed him in her eye like a pupil. After a while, when she weaned him from milk, She began a different kind of care. At bedtime, she would straighten his bed, Burning like a candle above his head. In the morning, when he arose from sleep, She would adorn him like a golden doll. She would apply kohl to his dark narcissus eyes, And tightly bind the clothes upon his body. She would place a golden cap askew on his head, And hang his black locks around it. With jeweled bands of rubies and gold, She would bind a sash around his slender waist. Thus she served him day and night, Until his age of youth reached fourteen. He was fourteen, a moon-faced beauty, His years became fourteen, like his moon-like face. The pedestal of his beauty rose extremely high, And desire for him took place in all hearts. His beauty increased a hundredfold, and then a hundred thousandfold, A hundred thousand hearts became restless with his love. With a stature like a spear was that pleasing one, An rising sun a spear's height high. When his spear-like stature shot up, From it, a wound reached everyone's heart. Wherever that height cast its radiance, The soul of the world was burned by that sun. His forehead was a full moon, half of it hidden, Forming a conjunction with the eclipsed crescent. His nose beneath that eclipsed crescent moon Was like a camphor-white Alif in the midst of the moon. His intoxicated eye was a people-hunting deer, Its playing ground in the midst of a tulip garden. He was a king of the realm of beauty with his cheeks, The majesty of kingship accompanied him. His royal signet ring was a fiery ruby, The treasure of pearls and gems was under his authority. His fresh apple of a chin was a fruit of the garden of paradise; Praised be the hand of the one who planted this fruit! The fountain of grace of his double chin's apple Brought the souls of the thirsty to their lips. His neck stood high above other moon-faced ones; In his lasso was the neck of the proudest. The sincere lovers, to ward off harm, Bound protective amulets on his arm with prayers. The power of all strongmen was brought low by him; Under his sway were the silver-armed ones. For his arm, from left and right, The soul-sacrificing ones held their life-coins ready in their sleeves. His hand conquered pure silver, And twisted the arm of every iron-wristed wrestler. The coin of comfort from both palms was in his fist; The beauty of the signet ring was sealed upon his finger. Whatever has been said in description of his beauty, A pearl has been pierced from the ocean of form. Now pawn the ear of your soul to me, And hear another portion of his circumstances.
