Original content

English translation

And among them: Suhayl of gnosis and pole of love, Abu Abdallah Ahmad ibn Yahya ibn al-Jalla, may God be pleased with him.

He was of the great ones of the community and the masters of his time. He had a good path and a praiseworthy conduct, and was a companion of Junayd and Abu'l-Hasan al-Nuri and a group of the great ones, may God be pleased with them. He has lofty speech and subtle allusions concerning the realities (haqa'iq).

It is related from him that he said: 'The aspiration of the gnostic is toward his Lord, and he does not incline to anything besides Him.' The aspiration (himmat) of the gnostic is with the Truth, and it does not turn back from Him to anything, nor does it descend upon anything; for the gnostic has nothing except the knowledge of Him. Since the capital of his heart is gnosis, the object of his aspiration is the vision of God; for the scattering of aspirations brings forth anxieties, and anxieties bar one from the court of the Truth.

They relate a story from him that he said: One day I saw a beautiful-faced Christian. I was bewildered by his beauty and stood facing him. Junayd, may God's mercy be upon him, passed by me. I said to him: 'O master, will God Almighty burn such a face in the fire of Hell?' He said to me, may God be pleased with him: 'O son, this is the petty marketplace of the ego (nafs) that holds you to this, not the contemplation of admonition; for if you were looking with admonition, in every atom of existing things this same wonder is present; but soon you will be tormented for this irreverence.' He said: When Junayd turned his face away from me, at that moment I forgot the Quran, and for years I sought aid from God Almighty and repented until I recovered the Quran. Now I do not have the boldness to turn my attention to any of the existing things or to waste my time gazing upon objects.
