English translation

And among them: the choice of the people of the two sanctuaries and the delight of the eye of all the masters, Abu Abdallah Muhammad ibn al-Fadl al-Balkhi, may Allah be pleased with him.

He was among the eminent masters and was approved of in Iraq and Khorasan. He was a disciple of Ahmad ibn Khadrawayh, and Abu Uthman al-Hiri had a great inclination toward him. The zealots drove him out of Balkh on account of their bigotry for a doctrine. He went to Samarkand and passed the rest of his life there.

It is related from him that he said: 'The most knowing of people concerning Allah is the most strenuous of them in striving to fulfill His commands and the most closely following of the Sunnah of His Prophet.' That is, the greatest of the people of gnosis is the most diligent of them in discharging the Law and the most eager in preserving the Sunnah and in following it; and whoever is nearer to the Truth is more zealous for His commands, and whoever is farther from Him is farther from following His Messenger and more averse to it.

It is related from him that he said: 'I marvel at one who crosses the deserts and wastes and wildernesses until he reaches His House and His sanctuary, because in it are the traces of His prophets—how does he not cross his own self and his desire until he reaches his own heart, because in it are the traces of his Lord!' I marvel at one who traverses the deserts and wildernesses until he reaches His House, wherein are the traces of His prophets—why does he not traverse the desert of the lower self and the sea of desire until he reaches his own heart, wherein are the traces of his Lord!? That is, the heart, which is the seat of gnosis, is more honored than the Kaaba, which is the direction of service. The Kaaba is that to which the servant's gaze is ever turned, and the heart is that to which the gaze of the Truth is ever turned. There where the heart is, my Beloved is there; there where His decree is, my desire is there; and there where the trace of my prophets is, the qibla of my friends is there. And Allah knows best.
