و منهم: پادشاه وقت و زمان خود و مفرد اندر بیان و عیان خود، ابوعبدالله محمدبن علی، المعروف بالداستانی، رضی الله عنه عالم بود به انواع علوم، و سایس و مهذب و از محتشمان درگاه حق بود و وی را کلام مهذب و اشارات لطیف است. و شیخ سهلکی که امام آن دیار بود وی را خلفی نیکو بود. و من جزوی از انفاس وی از سهلکی شنیدم و آن سخت عالی و خوش است؛ چنان که گوید: «التوحید عنک موجود و أنت فی التوحید مفقود.» یعنی توحید از تو درست است، اما تو اندر توحید نادرستی؛ که بر مقتضای حق وی قیام نکنی و کمترین درجه اندر توحید نفی تصرف باشد از تو اندر ملک و اثبات تسلیم تو اندر امور خود مر حق را، عز وجل. شیخ سهلکی گفت: وقتی اندر بسطام ملخ آمد و همه درختان و کشت ها از کثرت آن سیاه گشت. مردمان دست به خروش بردند. شیخ مرا گفت: «این چه مشغله است؟» گفتم: «ملخ آمده است و مردمان بدان رنجه دل می باشند.» شیخ برخاست و بر بام برآمد و روی به آسمان کرد. در حال همه برخاستند و نماز دیگر یکی نمانده بود و کس را برگی زیان نشد. والله اعلم.

English translation

And among them: the king of his time and age, and unique in his exposition and manifestation, Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ali, known as al-Dastani, may Allah be pleased with him. He was learned in various sciences, disciplined and refined, and among the dignified ones of the court of the Truth. He has refined discourse and subtle allusions. And Shaykh Sahlaki, who was the imam of that region, was a good successor to him. And I heard a portion of his utterances from Sahlaki, and it is exceedingly lofty and pleasant; as he says: 'Tawhid exists from you, but you are absent within Tawhid.' That is, the declaration of divine unity from you is sound, but you within that unity are unsound, for you do not stand upon what its truth requires. The least degree in Tawhid is the negation of your own disposal over the kingdom and the affirmation of your submission of your own affairs to the Truth, mighty and majestic. Shaykh Sahlaki said: Once in Bastam locusts came, and all the trees and crops turned black from their multitude. The people raised an outcry. The Shaykh said to me: 'What is this commotion?' I said: 'Locusts have come, and the people are grieved at heart by them.' The Shaykh rose and climbed onto the roof and turned his face to the sky. At once they all departed, and by the time of the afternoon prayer not one remained, and no one suffered the loss of even a single leaf. And Allah knows best.
