English translation

And among them: the king of his age in Sufism, whose nature was free of affectation and self-interested control, Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Khafif, may Allah be pleased with him. He was the imam of his age in the various sciences, and in spiritual struggles he holds a mighty rank, and in the realities he possesses a healing exposition. His path is manifest and evident in his writings. He had met Ibn Ata, Shibli, Husayn Mansur, and Jariri, and at Mecca he kept the company of Abu Ya'qub al-Nahrajuri. He undertook fine journeys in a state of detachment (tajrid). He was of the sons of kings; God Most High granted him repentance, and he turned away from the world, and his esteem is great in the hearts of the people of inner meanings. It is related from him that he said: 'al-Tawhid al-i'rad an al-tabi'a.' Unification (tawhid) is the turning away from nature; for the natures are all blind to His blessings and veiled from His bounties. So until turning away from nature is attained, coming toward the Real does not come into being, and the possessor of nature remains veiled from the reality of unification; and when you have seen the affliction of nature, you have reached the reality of unification. And he has many signs and proofs. And God knows best.
