English translation

And among them: the chief of the saints, and the counselor of the people of purity, Abu Ahmad al-Muzaffar ibn Ahmad ibn Hamdan, may Allah be pleased with him.

Upon the pillow of leadership, God — mighty and glorious — opened this matter to him and placed the crown of grace upon his head. He had a fine mode of expression and a lofty discourse concerning annihilation (fana) and subsistence (baqa).

And Shaykh al-Mashayikh Abu Sa'id, may Allah's mercy be upon him, said: 'We were brought to the Court by the path of servanthood, and Shaykh Muzaffar by the path of lordship; that is, we attained contemplation through spiritual striving, while he came from contemplation to spiritual striving.'

And I heard from him that he said: 'That which appeared to the great ones through crossing valleys and wastelands, I found upon the pillow and the seat of honor.' Those who are people of self-conceit take this saying of that elder as a claim (of pretension), and that comes from a deficiency in their discernment; for in no case is an expression of the truth of one's own state a mere claim, especially when it is (uttered) among the (worthy) folk.

And today a fine and noble successor remains of him, Khwaja Ahmad, may Allah keep him safe.

One day I was in his presence, and one of the pretenders of Nishapur was near him. In the midst of his discourse he was saying: 'One becomes annihilated, then one becomes subsistent.' Khwaja Muzaffar, may Allah's mercy be upon him, said: 'How can subsistence take form upon annihilation? For annihilation is an expression of non-being, and subsistence is an indication of being, and each of these negates its counterpart, that is, its opposite. So annihilation is known; but since it is non-being, if it should become being, that is not the same identity; for that would itself be another thing. And it is not permissible that essences should be annihilated, but the annihilation of an attribute is permissible, and the annihilation of a cause. So when the attribute and the cause are annihilated, the qualified thing and the effect remain. Annihilation upon his essence is not permissible.'

And Ali ibn Uthman al-Jullabi, may Allah be pleased with him, says: I did not remember the words of that Khwaja exactly, but the meaning of that expression is this which I have recalled, and I mean to make the intent of the expression plain so that it may be more general.

So the intent of this is: the choice of the servant is his attribute, and by his own choice the servant is veiled from the choice of the Real. So the attribute of the servant becomes his veil from the Real, and inevitably the choice of the Real is pre-eternal and that of the servant is originated, and annihilation is not permissible upon the pre-eternal; and when the choice of the Real subsists in the servant, inevitably the servant's choice is annihilated and his own disposal is cut off. And God knows best.

One day, in intense heat, I came in to him, disheveled in my traveling garment. He said to me: 'O Abu al-Hasan, tell me your present spiritual desire, what it is.' I said: 'I long for sama (spiritual audition).' At once he sent someone to bring the singer, and a company of people of fellowship; and the fire of youth, the strength of desire, and the burning of the beginning made me agitated in the sama of the words. When a while had passed and the sovereignty and ebullition of that affliction lessened in me, he said to me: 'How was it for you with this sama?' I said: 'O Shaykh, I was exceedingly delighted.' He said: 'A time will come when this and the cawing of a crow will both be the same to you. The strength of hearing lasts only so long as there is no contemplation. When contemplation is attained, the dominion of hearing becomes nothing; and see that you do not make a habit of this, lest it become (second) nature and you be left behind by it. And God is the one whose help is sought, and upon Him is reliance, and God suffices us and He is the best companion.'
