Original content

English translation

And among them: the summoner of disciples by command, Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Masruq, may Allah be pleased with him. He was among the great and eminent ones of Khorasan, and by the consensus of all the saints of God, exalted and glorified, he was among the awtad al-ard (the pillars of the earth). He had companionship with the Qutb al-Madar (the Axis of the sphere). He was asked: 'Tell us, who is the Qutb?' He did not reveal it openly; but by way of allusion he made it clear that it was Junayd, may Allah be pleased with them. He had served forty masters of spiritual stability (tamkin) and gained benefits from them, and he was accomplished in the outer and inner sciences. It is related from him that he said: 'Whoever's joy is in other than the Truth, his joy bequeaths sorrows; and whoever's intimacy is not in the service of his Lord, his intimacy bequeaths desolation.' Whoever rejoices in other than God Most High, his joy is wholly sorrow; and whoever has no intimacy in the service of God Most High, his intimacy is wholly desolation. That is, whatever is other than Him is perishing (fana); whoever rejoices in the perishing, when the perishing itself perishes, he becomes grief-stricken. And other than His service is vain dust; when the lowliness of created things becomes manifest, his intimacy becomes wholly desolation. Thus the sorrow and desolation of the whole world lies in beholding the other. And God knows best.
