English translation

Among them: the adornment of the path of sainthood and the beauty of the assembly of the people of guidance, Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Qassab, may Allah be pleased with him.

The foremost masters of Transoxiana found him and kept his company. He is famed and renowned for the loftiness of his spiritual state, the truthfulness of his insight, and the abundance of his proofs and miracles (karamat).

And Abu Abdullah al-Hannati, who was the imam of Tabaristan, says: 'One of the graces of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, is that He makes someone such, without learning, that when something in the sciences of religion and their principles and the subtleties of the doctrine of Divine Unity becomes difficult for us, we ask him — and that is Abu al-Abbas al-Qassab, may Allah be pleased with him.'

He was unlettered, yet his speech and subtle points were exceedingly lofty in the science of Sufism and its principles. In his beginning and his end he was of exalted state and fair conduct. I have heard many anecdotes from him, but my way in this book is brevity.

They say a child had taken hold of a camel's halter, with a heavy load, and was leading it in the bazaar of Amul — and that place is always mud and mire. The camel's foot slipped and it fell, and the load broke. The people set about to take the burden off the camel's back, and the child raised his hand crying for help. He (al-Qassab) was passing by. He said: 'What has happened?' They recounted the situation. He, may Allah be pleased with him, took hold of the camel's halter, turned his face toward heaven — which is the qibla of prayer — and said: 'Set this camel right; and if You would not set it right, why did You make the heart of al-Qassab burn at the weeping of this child?'

At once the camel rose and went off straight and sound.

It is related from him that he said: The whole world, whether they wish it or not, must grow accustomed to the Lord Most High — otherwise their hearts will be pained. For when you grow accustomed to Him, in affliction you see the One who afflicts, and affliction no longer seems affliction; but if you do not grow accustomed, then when an affliction comes your heart is pained. For the Lord Most High does not alter His decree for anyone's pleasure or displeasure. So our being pleased with the portion He decrees is our comfort. Whoever grows accustomed to Him, his heart is set at ease; and whoever turns away from Him is pained at the arrival of destiny. And He knows best.
