And among them: the ornament of the spiritual pillars and the shaykh of the devout worshippers, Abu al-Fadl Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Khuttali, may Allah be pleased with him.

My own following upon this Path was through him. He was learned in the science of Quranic exegesis (tafsir) and in the traditions (riwayat), and in Sufism he held the doctrine of al-Junayd. He was a disciple of al-Husri, and a companion of al-Sirawani, and among the peers of Abu Amr al-Qazwini and Abu al-Hasan al-Saliba.

For sixty years, by way of a sincere withdrawal (uzlat), he fled into corners, and he had erased his own name from among the people, and he was mostly upon Mount Lukam. He attained a good long life and had many signs and proofs. Yet he did not wear the garb and observe the customs of the Sufis, and he was severe with the people of formalism; and I never saw anyone more awe-inspiring than him.

I heard from him that he said: 'al-Dunya yawmun wa-lana fiha sawmun.' The world is a single day, and we are fasting within that day — meaning that we take no share of it and do not fall into its bondage; because of what we have seen of its afflictions, and having become aware of its veils, and having turned away from it.

Once, when I was pouring water over his hands for the ritual purification, it passed through my mind: 'Since all affairs are by divine decree and apportionment, why should free men make themselves servants of the elders (pirs)?' He said: 'O son, I knew what you were thinking. Know that every decree has a cause; when God Most High wishes to place the crown of nobility upon the head of a mere constable's child, He grants him repentance and occupies him in the service of a friend of God, so that this service becomes the cause of his ennoblement.'

And many subtle graces like this appeared to us from him every day.

And on the day that death came to him, he was at Bayt al-Jinn — which is a village upon the crest of a mountain pass between Baniyas and Damascus. His head was resting upon my lap, and there was a distress in my heart concerning one of my companions, as is the custom of human beings. He said to me: 'O son, let me tell you a matter of belief; if you set yourself right upon it, you will be delivered from all distresses. Know that in all situations the Creator of states is God, Mighty and Majestic, of both good and evil; you must not quarrel with His act nor take any distress to heart.' And he did not prolong the counsel beyond this, and surrendered his soul to the Truth. May the mercy of God be upon him, and may He be pleased with him, and may He give him to drink from the rain of His good pleasure. And He knows best.
