English translation

And among them: the unique imam, and the honor of the people of his age, Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Ahmad al-Kharaqani, may Allah be pleased with him. He was among the most eminent of the shaykhs and their elders, and in his own time he was praised by all the saints of God. Shaykh Abu Sa'id set out to visit him, and he had subtle conversations with him on every kind of subject. And when he was departing, he said: 'I have chosen you as the heir of my covenant (my successor).' And I heard from Hasan-i Mu'addab, who was the servant of Shaykh Abu Sa'id, that: when the shaykh reached his presence, he spoke no word at all; he was a listener, and gave no reply except in answer to his words. I said to him: 'O Shaykh, why did you become so silent?' He said: 'From a single sea, one expounder is enough.' And I heard from Ustad Abu al-Qasim al-Qushayri, may Allah be pleased with him, that: when I came to the province of Kharaqan, my eloquence deserted me and my power of expression remained not, from the awe of that elder; until I imagined that I had been dismissed from my own province (spiritual station). It is related from him that he said: The path is twofold: one the path of error and one the path of guidance. One is the path of the servant to God the Exalted, and one is the path of God to the servant. That which is the path of error is the path of the servant to God, and that which is the path of guidance is the path of God to the servant. So whoever says: 'I reached Him' has not reached, and whoever says: 'I was made to reach' has reached; because being made to reach is bound up in not-reaching, and not-reaching in reaching. And God knows best.
