Original content

English translation

And among them: the master of the innermost secret of the travelers of the Path, and the beauty of the souls of the people of realization, Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Ibrahim al-Husri, may Allah's mercy be upon him.

He was among the honored free ones of the court of God Most High, and among the great imams of the Sufis. In his own age he was without peer. His speech is lofty, and his expressions are pleasing in all meanings.

It is related from him that he said: 'Leave me to my affliction; bring forth what you have. Are you not among the children of Adam, whom God created with His own hand by a special creation, and gave life to by His spirit without any intermediary, and commanded the angels to prostrate to him, then gave him a command, and he opposed it? When the first of the wine-jar is dregs, how will its end be?' That is: Leave me to my affliction — are you not among the children of Adam, the one whom God Most High created with the hand of His power by a special act of creation, and whom He brought to life by the spirit without the mediation of any other, and commanded the angels to prostrate to him; then He gave him a command, and in that command he became opposed? When the first of the wine-jar was dregs, how will its end be? That is, when a human being is left to himself, all is opposition; but when God sends His own care to him, all is love. So enumerate the goodness of God's care, and set the ugliness of your own conduct against it, and continually pass your life in this. And in God is help and protection.

This is an indication of some of the mention of the foremost of the Sufis and their exemplars, may God be pleased with them all. And if I had recalled all of them in this book, or spent precious time explaining all of them and bringing their anecdotes, I would have fallen short of my aim and the book would have become overly long. Now I shall attach to them a group of the later ones, so that the benefits and blessings may be greater. And in God is help and success.
