English translation

And among them: the witness of the verifiers, and the guide of the disciples, Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Muhammad al-Isfahani, may Allah be pleased with him. He is also called Ali ibn Sahl. He was among the great masters. Junayd has an elegant correspondence with him, and Amr ibn Uthman went to Isfahan to visit him. He was a companion of Abu Turab and a peer of Junayd. He was distinguished by a praiseworthy path in Sufism, through contentment and spiritual discipline, protected from temptations and afflictions, with a fine tongue in matters of truths and conduct, and a subtle expression in the delicate points and allusions. It is related from him that he said: 'Presence is superior to certainty, because presence is a settled dwelling and certainty is passing thoughts.' Presence with the Truth is more excellent than certainty of the Truth; because presence dwells settled within the heart and heedlessness is not permitted upon it, whereas certainty is a fleeting notion that sometimes comes and sometimes goes. So those present are in the inner court, and those with certainty are at the threshold; and concerning absence and presence we shall bring a separate chapter in this book. He said, may Allah's mercy be upon him: 'From the time of Adam until the rising of the Hour, people say: the heart, the heart; and I love to see a man who describes what the heart is, or how the heart is, yet I do not see one.' From the time of Adam, peace be upon him, onward, people say: the heart, the heart; and I would love to see a man who tells me what the heart is or how it is, and I do not see him. The common folk call that piece of flesh the heart, and that belongs to the mad, the boys, the children, and the overpowered; yet they are heartless. So what then is the heart, of which we hear nothing but a term? That is, if we call the intellect the heart, that is not the heart; and if we call the spirit the heart, that is not the heart; and if we call knowledge the heart, that is not the heart. So all the witnesses of the Truth subsist through the heart, yet of it nothing exists but a mere term.
