And among them: the elder of the people of submission, and steadfast in the path of love, Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Isma'il, Khayr al-Nassaj, may Allah be pleased with him.

He was among the great sheikhs of his time and spiritual practice, and he had a fine eloquence in exhortations and a refined expression in subtle allusions. He had attained a long life, and both Shibli and Ibrahim Khawwas repented in his assembly. He sent Shibli to Junayd in order to preserve the honor of Junayd, may Allah be pleased with them. He was a disciple of Sari, and among the peers of Junayd and Abu al-Hasan al-Nuri, and he was honored in the sight of Junayd, and Abu Hamza of Baghdad held him in high esteem.

It is related that he is called Khayr al-Nassaj (Khayr the weaver) for this reason: when he went from his birthplace to Samarra intending the pilgrimage, his path passed through Kufa. At the gate of Kufa a silk-weaver seized him, saying: 'You are my slave, and your name is Khayr.' He regarded this as coming from the Truth (God) and did not contradict him, and for many years he did the man's work; and whenever he called him 'O Khayr,' he answered 'At your service (labbayk).' Until the man came to regret what he had done. He said to him: 'Go, for I had made a mistake and you are not my slave.' He departed and journeyed to Mecca. And he reached such a rank that Junayd said: 'Khayr is the best of us (Khayr khayruna).' He preferred that they call him Khayr. He would say: 'It is not permissible that a Muslim man gave me a name and I should change it.'

And it is said that when his death drew near, it was the time of prayer. When he came out of the swoon of death, he opened his eyes and looked toward the door and said, may Allah be pleased with him: 'Stop, may Allah give you well-being; for you are a commanded servant and I am a commanded servant, and what you have been commanded to do will not escape you, but what I have been commanded to do is a thing that may escape me; so let me carry out what I have been commanded, then carry out what you have been commanded. Wait, may Allah give you well-being, for you are a commanded and obedient servant, and what you have been commanded will not escape you — that is, the taking of the soul — and I am a commanded and obedient servant, and what I have been commanded, since it became obligatory upon the arrival of its appointed time, will be lost by the passing of the time and my departure — that is, the evening prayer. Leave me so that I may fulfill the command of the Truth, then I too will leave you to fulfill the command of the Truth.' Then he asked for water and performed the ablution and prayed the evening prayer and gave up his soul, may Allah's mercy be upon him.

That same night they saw him in a dream and said: 'What did Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, do with you?' He said, may Allah's mercy be upon him: 'Do not ask me about this, but I have found rest from your world. Do not ask me of this, but I have been delivered from your world.'

And it is related from him that he said, in his assembly: 'He expanded the breasts of the God-fearing with the light of certainty, and unveiled the inner sight of those of conviction with the light of the realities of faith.'

The God-fearing one cannot do without certainty, for his heart is expanded by the light of certainty; and the one of conviction cannot do without the realities of faith, for the insights of his intellect are illumined by the light of faith. So wherever there is faith there is certainty, and wherever there is certainty there is piety; because they are companions of one another, one following the other. And Allah knows best.
