Original content

English translation

And among them: the commander of the people of tribulation and affliction, and the substance of asceticism and piety, Abu Ali Shaqiq ibn Ibrahim al-Azdi, may Allah be pleased with him. He was the honored one of his people and their exemplar, learned in all the religious, practical, and mystical sciences. He has many compositions in the branches of knowledge. He was a companion of Ibrahim ibn Adham, and he had seen many of the shaykhs and attained their company. It is related from him that he said, may Allah be pleased with him: 'God made the people of His obedience alive in their death, and the people of disobedience dead in their life.' God Most High makes the people of obedience alive in the state of death, and the people of disobedience dead in life; that is, the obedient one, though dead, is alive, for the angels praise his obedience until the Resurrection, and his reward is everlasting; so he abides in the annihilation of death through the permanence of recompense. It is related that an old man came to him and said: 'O Shaykh, I have many sins and I wish to repent.' He said: 'You have come late.' The old man said: 'No, rather I have come early.' He said: 'Why?' He said: 'Whoever comes before death, even if he has come late, has come early.' And they say that the beginning of his state was this: one year there was a famine in Balkh, and people were eating one another, and all the Muslims were grieving. They saw a slave-boy in the market laughing and rejoicing. The people said: 'Why do you laugh? Are you not ashamed that all people are left in grief while you make so much merriment?' He said: 'I have no grief at all, for I am the slave of one who has an entire village, and he has relieved my heart of concern.' Shaqiq said, may Allah be pleased with him: 'O Lord, this slave rejoices so much over a master who owns a single village, and You are the Owner of kings and have taken upon Yourself our sustenance, and we have burdened our hearts with so much grief!' He turned away from the occupation of the world and took to treading the path of the Truth, and never again did he grieve over sustenance, and he continually said: 'I am the disciple of a slave-boy, I am the disciple of a slave-boy, and whatever I attained, I attained through him.' And this was humility on his part. He has many virtues. And God knows best.
