English translation

Among them: the noble poor one, and commander over all the saints, Abu Halim Habib ibn Sulaym al-Ra'i, may Allah be pleased with him. He held a great rank among the masters, and he has many clear signs and luminous proofs in all his states. He was a companion of Salman al-Farisi, may Allah be pleased with him. He relates from the Prophet, peace be upon him, that he said: 'The intention of the believer is better than his deed.' He was an owner of sheep; he would dwell on the bank of the Euphrates, and his path was seclusion. One of the masters relates that: I passed by him. I found him at prayer, while a wolf was guarding his sheep. I said, I shall pay a visit to this elder, for I see a great sign upon him. I waited a while until he finished his prayer. I gave him greeting. He said: 'O son, on what errand have you come?' I said: 'To visit you.' He said: 'May Allah reward you.' I said: 'O Shaykh, I see the wolf in harmony with the ewe.' He said: 'Because the shepherd of the ewe is in harmony with the Truth.' He said this, and he had a wooden bowl beneath a stone; two springs began to flow: one of milk and one of honey. I said: 'O Shaykh, by what did you attain this degree?' He said: 'By following Muhammad, peace be upon him. O son, the people of Moses were opposed to him, and despite this the stone gave them water, and Moses was not of the degree of Muhammad. Since I follow Muhammad, that the stone gives me honey and milk is no great wonder.' I said to him: 'Give me a counsel.' He said: 'Do not make your heart the chest of greed, nor your belly the vessel of the forbidden.' Do not make the heart a dwelling place of greed, nor make the stomach a place of the forbidden; for the ruin of people is in these two hollows, and salvation is in guarding these two. And my Shaykh had many narrations from him, may Allah be pleased with them both, but at this time more than this was not possible, for the books remained in the city of Ghazni—may Allah guard it—while I remained in the land of India, among strangers not of my kind. And praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
