English translation

And among them: the expounder of sciences and the establisher of practices, Abu Muhammad Ahmad ibn al-Husayn al-Jariri, may Allah be pleased with him.

He was among the chief companions of Junayd, and he had received the companionship of Sahl ibn Abdallah. He was acquainted with all the branches of knowledge. In jurisprudence he was the imam of his age, and he knew the principles well. And in the path of Sufism he was of such a rank that Junayd said: 'Teach my disciples courtly discipline and impose spiritual exercise upon them.' And after Junayd he was his designated successor.

It is related from him that he said: 'The permanence of faith, the sustaining of religions, and the well-being of bodies lie in three things: contentment (sufficiency), abstention (piety), and dietary restraint. Whoever is content with God, his inner self becomes sound; whoever abstains from what God has forbidden, his conduct becomes upright; and whoever restrains himself from what does not agree with him, his nature becomes disciplined. Thus the fruit of contentment is the purity of gnosis, the outcome of piety is goodness of character, and the goal of restraint is the balance of nature.' The permanence of faith, the maintaining of religion, and the well-being of the body are bound up in three things: first, being content; second, abstaining; and third, guarding one's diet. Whoever is content with God the Exalted, his inner self is set aright; whoever abstains from His prohibitions, his conduct becomes good; and whoever guards his diet, his soul attains spiritual discipline. So the reward of contentment is the purity of gnosis, the outcome of piety is goodness of character, and the goal of restraint is the balance of nature — that is, whoever is content with the Lord the Exalted, his gnosis becomes purified, and whoever grasps the practice of piety, his character becomes good in this world and the next; as the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: 'Whoever multiplies his prayer at night, his face becomes fair by day.' Whoever has abundant night prayer, his face is fair during the day. And in another report it is said that at the Resurrection the pious come forth 'their faces light upon pulpits of light' — with luminous faces upon thrones of light; and whoever takes up the way of restraint, his body is preserved from ailment and his soul from lust. These words are comprehensive and excellent. And God knows best.
