Section 131 - Allusion to the Third Pillar of the Pillars of Guardianship (Sainthood) which is Hunger

Original content

English translation

Since the third pillar of guardianship is hunger, Let us now return to it. Hunger is the food of the people of purity, The hardship and trial of those who overcome passion. For those dead on the path, hunger is the capital, From which they acquire a beautiful outcome. Mustafa said: Satan runs Like blood in the channels of man. One must grasp onto hunger, So that those channels become narrow for him. The Prophet, as if by this speech, Alluded to the generality of his control. For when the stomach is filled with food, All the limbs fall into sins. Through the passage of all, Iblis Blocks the path of man with tricks and deceit. The hand does not accept the decree of God, It takes what should not be taken. The foot goes on a path of ignorance and pride, By stages far from the direction of the destination. The sight, from two bright eyes, Opens a window into the sanctuary of wrath. The hearing sets its attention at the window of the ear, Listening to falsehood and backbiting, absorbing slander. The taste, constantly, whether at breakfast or supper, Takes taste of both the lawful and the forbidden. The touch, evening and morning, Touches the arms and legs of the beloveds. In short, in all the limbs, The action of Iblis has a general control. Man, from so much deceit and sorcery, Has him running in the veins and sinews like blood. When the stomach becomes empty of food, You are delivered from that accursed one and his control. All his channels become narrow, And you become safe from his trickery. When the stomach is full, each of the limbs Seeks food from its own desires. But if the stomach is hungry and thirsty, That is the very satiety of those limbs. Be courageous in hunger and the fasting of the stomach, So that the rest of the limbs may become full. To be hungry, with head in the collar of patience and steadfastness, Is better than, in the pursuit of lusts, Tearing like a mad wolf The skin of both acquaintance and stranger. To be hungry, with feet in the skirt of adversity, With back to the people and face to the wall, Is better than, like the dogs of the stable, Wagging your tail for a morsel. Hunger is the illumination of the house of your heart; Eating is the building of your house of clay. You left the house of the heart without light; Why are you making the house of clay prosperous?
