با که از بسمله ست حرف نخست
بر بواقی ازان ترفع جست

که ز رفعت گذشت و خفض گزید
به چنین رفعتی ز خفض رسید

به تواضع چو ساخت خود را پست
حق گرفتش بدان ترفع دست

پست شو پست تا بلند شوی
بهره بفکن که بهره مند شوی

دانه اول فتاد پست به خاک
تا ازان سر کشید بر افلاک

چون خود از جیب کسر بر زد سر
آن صفت شد به جار او منجر

زانکه مجرور خویش را جار است
خو گرفتن ز جار ناچار است

هر که دارد ز خصلتی مایه
اثر آن رسد به همسایه

کرد گویی بدین حیث اشعار
آن که الجار گفت ثم الدار

فقر خواهی به اهل فقر نشین
همنشینی به اهل فقر گزین

تا کنی کسب ازان فریق اثری
گرچه زان کسب نبودت خبری

طبع دزدد ز یار بهتر خوی
نافه گیرد ز مشک اذفر بوی

عامل اندر حروف بسمله نیست
غیر «بی » از حروف عامله نیست

از عمل نیست یک نفس خالی
از عمل یافت منصب عالی

درجات رفیع در دو سرا
مبتنی بر عمل فتاد تو را

رو ز قرآن الیه یصعد خوان
کش بود تا به یرفعه میدان

تا بدانی که طیب از کلمات
یعنی ارواح ناجی از ظلمات

چون به اوج بقا کنند صعود
جز به قدر عمل نخواهد بود

«بی » که بنشست در مقام «الف »
چون خلیفه به جای مستخلف

آنچه مستخلف از ترفع شان
داشت بنمود در خلیفه عیان

طول قد الف ازین معنی
می نماید کنون ز صورت «بی »

ور نه «بی » در مواضع دیگر
منخفض بود و نافراخته سر

پادشاهان خلیفگان حق اند
در خلافت همه بر این نسق اند

هر چه دارند اتصاف بدو
ز اقتدار و نفاذ امر علو

وصف های حق است عز و جل
گشته ظاهر ولی به قدر محل

English translation

The letter Bā', which is the first letter of the Basmala, Sought elevation over the rest of the letters because of this: It passed over high status and chose lowliness, And through such lowliness, it reached such high elevation. When, through humility, it made itself low, The Truth took its hand in that elevation. Become low, become low, so that you may become high; Cast away your portion so that you may be blessed with a portion. The seed first fell low into the dust, Until from it, it raised its head to the heavens. Since it raised its head from the pocket of ksar, That attribute led to its neighboring letters being dragged. For it is the preposition to its governed noun, And taking after one's neighbor is inevitable. Whoever possesses the substance of a trait, Its effect will reach the neighbor. As if he alluded to this very aspect, The one who said: 'First the neighbor, then the house.' If you seek spiritual poverty, sit with the folk of poverty; Choose the company of the folk of poverty, So that you may acquire some influence from that group, Even if you are unaware of that acquisition. One's nature steals better traits from a friend, Just as the musk-gland acquires its scent from pure musk. Among the letters of the Basmala, there is no governing agent; None of the letters is active except 'Bā'. Not for a single breath is it free from action; And through action, it found a high rank. For you, high ranks in both worlds Are founded upon action. Go and read from the Quran: 'To Him ascends...', And know its arena reaches until '...He raises it'. So that you may know that the 'good words'— Meaning the souls saved from darkness— When they ascend to the peak of eternity, It will not be except in proportion to their deeds. The 'Bā' which sat in the place of the 'Alif', Like a caliph in place of the one who appointed him, Whatever elevated status the predecessor possessed Became clearly manifest in the caliph. The tall stature of Alif, in this sense, Is now shown in the form of 'Bā'. Otherwise, in other places, 'Bā' Would be low and would not raise its head. Kings are the caliphs of the Truth; In their deputy-ship, they are all on this very method. Whatever qualities they are described with Of power, execution of commands, and loftiness, Are the attributes of God, Might and Majesty be He, Made manifest, but in proportion to the capacity of the vessel.
