و منهم: سرور دلها، و نور سرها، عمرو بن عثمان المکی، رضی الله عنه
از کبرا و سادات اهل طریقت بود. وی را تصانیف مشهور است اندر حقایق این علم و نسبت ارادت خود به جنید کردی، از بعد آن که ابوسعید خراز را دیده بود و با نباجی صحبت کرده بود و اندر اصول، امام وقت بود.

از وی می آید که گفت: «لایقع علی کیفیة الوجد عبارة، لأنه سر الله عند المؤمنین.» عبارت بر کیفیت وجد دوستان نیفتد؛ از آن چه آن سر حق است به نزدیک مؤمنان و هرچه عبارت بنده اندر آن تصرف تواند کرد آن سر حق نباشد؛ از آن چه کلیت تکلف بنده از اسرار ربانی منقطع است.
و گویند چون عمرو به اصفهان آمد، حدثی به صحبت وی پیوست و پدر مانع وی بود از صحبت عمرو؛ تا بیمار شد و مدتی برآمد. روزی شیخ برخاست و با جماعتی فقرا به عیادت وی شد. حدث به شیخ اشارت کرد تا قوال را بگوید تا بیتی برخواند. عمرو قوال را گفت: برخوان:

مالی مرضت فلم یعدنی عائد
منکم ویمرض عبدکم فأعود

بیمار چون بشنید برخاست و بنشست و لهب و سلطان بیماری وی کمتر شد. گفت: زدنی:
وأشد من مرضی علی صدودکم

و صدود عبدکم علی شدید
بیمار برخاست و نالانی از او کم شد، و پدر وی را به صحبت عمرو مسلم گردانید و آن اندیشه که می بودش اندر دل، از آن توبه کرد. وآن حدث یکی از بزرگان طریقت شد. و هوأعلم.

English translation

And among them: the joy of hearts, and the light of innermost secrets, Amr ibn Uthman al-Makki, may Allah be pleased with him. He was one of the great ones and masters of the people of the Path. He has renowned writings on the realities of this science. He attached his own discipleship to Junayd, after he had met Abu Sa'id al-Kharraz and had kept company with al-Nabaji, and in the fundamentals he was the leading authority of his age. It is related from him that he said: 'No expression can fall upon the nature of ecstasy (wajd), for it is a secret of God among the believers.' No expression can fall upon the nature of the ecstasy of the friends [of God], because that is a secret of the Truth in the sight of the believers, and whatever a servant's expression can act upon is not that secret of the Truth, because the servant's whole capacity for effort is cut off from the divine mysteries. And they say that when Amr came to Isfahan, a young man attached himself to his company, and the youth's father forbade him from associating with Amr; until [the youth] fell ill, and some time passed. One day the shaykh arose and, with a group of dervishes, went to visit him. The youth gestured to the shaykh to bid the singer recite a verse. Amr told the singer: Recite: 'What ails me that I fall ill and no visitor from among you visits me, yet your servant falls ill and I go to visit him?' When the sick one heard this, he rose up and sat, and the flame and dominion of his sickness lessened. He said: Increase for me: 'And harsher than my sickness upon me is your turning away, and your servant's turning away from you is severe.' The sick one rose up and his moaning grew less, and the father entrusted him to Amr's company, and the misgiving that had been in his heart, of that he repented. And that youth became one of the great ones of the Path. And God knows best.
