Section 22 - Another Question from the Son and the Gnostic's Answer

Original content

English translation

Then the son said: 'O Gnostic, Who are aware of the stations of love, Since your inner inclination toward me no longer remains, What keeps your physical appearance seated before me? Since you can live far away from me, What is the purpose of coming to me at every moment?' The Gnostic replied: 'O sound youth, It is not the custom of a noble guest, That when he has finished eating, He casts the host out of his heart, Rips the tablecloth, breaks the dining tray, And throws the saltshaker to the ground; Or when he has taken his pleasure from sweetmeats and wine, Throws a stone at the platter or the cup. Rather, honoring that which serves as the intermediary, Is the link in attaining one's desired goal; It is a duty in the creed of those who recognize the truth, Nay, a debt upon the conscience of the generous.'
