بود در دل چنان که این دفتر
نبود از نصف اولین کمتر

لیک خامه ز جنبش پیوست
چون بدینجا رسید سر بشکست

چرخ اگر باز بگذرد ز ستیز
سازدم گزلک عزیمت تیز

دهم از سر تراش آن خامه
برسانم به مقطع این نامه

ور نه آن را که خاطر صافیست
اینقدر هم که گفته شد کافیست

داشت جهدی دبیر چرخ برین
در رقم کردن حروف سنین

چون رقومش به صاد و ضاد رسید
خامه را حکم ایستاد رسید

هم بر این حرف این خجسته کلام
ختم شد والسلام والاکرام

English translation

It was intended in my heart that this book Would not be less than the first half; But the pen, from its continuous movement, Broke its tip when it reached this point. If heaven ceases its hostility And sharpens the pen-knife of my determination, I shall trim that pen once more And bring this book to its end. Otherwise, for him who possesses a pure mind, Even this much that has been said is sufficient. The scribe of the lofty sphere made an effort In writing down the letters of the years; When its numbers reached Sad and Dad, The command to stop reached the pen. On this very letter, this auspicious word Was concluded, and peace and honor be upon you.
