Section 9 - As for the Junaydiyya

Original content

English translation

The Junaydis trace their allegiance to Abu al-Qasim al-Junayd ibn Muhammad, may Allah be pleased with him. In his time he was called 'Ta'us al-Ulama' (Peacock of the Scholars), and he was the master (sayyid) of this group and the imam of their imams. His path is founded on sobriety (sahw), the opposite of the Tayfuris. His disagreement has already been mentioned, and the most well-known and most famous of the doctrines is his doctrine. And all my masters, may Allah's mercy be upon them, were Junaydis. Apart from this, there is much difference in the accounts of his conduct in this path; but for fear of prolixity I have abridged it, and whoever wishes to know more than this should read it elsewhere so that it becomes better known; for my method in this book is brevity and the avoidance of prolixity. In Allah is help.

And among the anecdotes I found that: when Husayn ibn Mansur, in his state of ecstasy (ghalaba), renounced Amr ibn Uthman and came to Junayd — may Allah's mercy be upon them — Junayd said to him: 'For what have you come?' He said: 'That I may keep company with the shaykh.' Junayd said: 'If you do not keep company with us through the annihilation of attributes, it will be just as it was with Sahl al-Tustari and with Amr.' He said: 'O Shaykh, sobriety and intoxication are two attributes of the servant, and as long as the servant remains veiled from his Lord until his attributes are annihilated. Sobriety and intoxication are two attributes belonging to the servant, and the servant is continually veiled from his Lord until his attributes are annihilated.' Junayd said, may Allah be pleased with him: 'O Ibn Mansur, you have erred concerning sobriety and intoxication, you have erred in [the matter of] sobriety and intoxication; for there is no dispute that sobriety is an expression of the soundness of one's state with the Truth, and this does not fall under the attribute and acquisition of the servant. And I, O son of Mansur, see in your speech much that is superfluous and many expressions without meaning.' And He knows best.
