Original content

English translation

A heart free of the pain of love is not a heart; A body without heartache is nothing but water and clay.

Turn away from the world toward the sorrow of love, For the world of love is a delightful world.

May the sorrow of love never diminish in anyone's heart; May there be no loveless heart in the world.

The heavens wander bewildered by love's passion; The world is filled with turmoil by love's clamor.

Become love's captive so that you may be free; Place its sorrow upon your breast so that you may be joyful.

The wine of love will give you warmth and intoxication, And deliver you from coldness and self-worship.

By remembering love, the lover found renewal; By invoking it, the lover gained renown.

Had Majnun not drunk wine from this cup, Who would have carried his name through both worlds?

Thousands of wise and learned people departed, But they departed as strangers to love.

Neither name nor trace of them remained, Nor any tale of them in the hands of time.

Many birds of lovely form have existed, Yet people have closed their lips to mentioning them.

When people of the heart tell legends of love, They speak of the nightingale and the moth.

Though you may attempt a hundred undertakings in this world, Love alone will free you from yourself.

Do not turn your face from love, even if it is metaphorical, For it prepares the way for true love.

Until you have learned the alphabet on the first tablet, How can you study lessons from the Quran?

I heard that a disciple went before an elder So that the elder might guide him on his spiritual path.

The elder said: If your foot has never been stirred by love, Go, become a lover, and then return to us.

For without drinking the cup of formal love, You cannot taste a draught of inner meaning.

Yet you must not remain confined to the form; You must quickly carry yourself across this bridge.

When you wish to set down your baggage at the destination, You must not stand still upon the bridge.

Praise be to God that for as long as I have dwelt in this cloister, I have traveled lightly upon the path of love.

Like a nurse who saw my musk without its pod, Love's blade severed my navel cord.

Like a mother placing her breast upon my lips, Love gave me milk drawn from blood-drinking passion.

Although my hair is now as white as milk, The savor of that milk still remains within me.

Love belongs neither to old age nor to youth; This enchantment of love continually breathes upon me:

Jami, since you have grown old in loving, Make your spirit light and become a master in love.

Set down a tale of love-play So that a trace of you may remain in the world.

Draw an image with your subtlety-producing pen That will remain in your place when you depart.

When this call from love reached my ears, My reason went out to welcome it.

With my soul I pledged myself to obedience And established a new mode of enchantment.

I intend, if God grants success, That my date-palm should bear the fruit of realized truth.

From love's burning, I shall utter such subtleties That their fire will burn reason's baggage of subtle learning.

I shall cast smoke into this turquoise dome And fill the eyes of the stars with tears.

I shall raise discourse to such a station That heaven itself will applaud me with 'Well done!'
