English translation

Come, O beloved child of mine, dear son, lend your ear to the pearl of my counsel. Sit like an oyster a moment, lips silent; when I scatter pearls, give ear to me. Hear counsel, and make knowledge your companion; once you have understood, then act upon it. If the light of intelligence does not fall from the ear into the heart, what difference between a mouse-hole and the hole of an ear. Knowledge that has no deed as its companion is the business of none but the unwise. The collyrium of knowing will not please your heart if your eye is not anointed with it. The great ones who have taught religion have counseled the young thus: O you of bright conscience like the sun, take up the way of truthfulness from the purity of dawn. In every affair keep your heart true with God, for through righteousness you shall be saved. What gain in worship though your back is bent double, when your heart's face is not aligned with the qibla. Be ever bright-hearted and pure of judgment, just toward the servants of God. Toward every low and worthy one in this workshop, give justice from yourself and demand it of none. At the breath of dawn, like the turning heavens, open upon the horizons nothing but the eye of love. The sphere gained its superiority for this: that its love encompasses every mote. Since you shall need greatness in old age, look upon the old with the eye of honor. Be a kinsman to the kinless old, for by this way I know you will reach old age. Especially the elder who is a leader, who in his own age also nurtures the old. Do not look on the young with an eye of contempt; many a young one sits at the head of greatness. A gem's worth comes from its luster and hue; what matter that it is small compared to a stone. Toward any enemy that is external, even if his enmities are bloody, come forward like a mountain with forbearance and gentleness; do not withdraw your head from the sword of his cruelty. But toward the inner foe, which is your own carnal soul, forbearance from you is not right. In tormenting it be a blood-shedding sword; be ever sharp in shedding its blood. Giving counsel upon the hearts of friends is like the breath of dawn upon the garden. If the morning breeze bestows no share upon the garden, when will the knot of the bud's heart be loosened. Show generosity to the needy dervish; open his shut-up affair with a gift. He is like a thirsty-lipped field and you the cloud; why withhold the rain from the field. From the ignorant one who keeps no secrets of speech, turn away the reins of your discourse. When your harvest bursts into flame from him, do not pour oil to quench the flame. Be humble toward the one who is learned, whose rank in knowledge is above yours. Knowledge is water and high ground the land; how can high ground profit from flowing water. When does a pure pearl fall into a man's palm without his having plunged his head beneath the water. The pen's tongue is worn from this discourse; the page of the letter has blackened from this writing. How well the wise one said: in anyone's house, when there is a listener, one word from the speaker suffices. Better that we make our way into the lane of the heart, and cut short the tongue with this word. Come, cupbearer, and cast a new design; pull the clay brick from the arch of the wine-jar. Rise up to the retreat of seeking, and with that brick open for me the door of discourse. Come, minstrel, and tune the lute; place a bond upon my tongue from its string. When it strikes up a melody, I become all ear; I sit silent from idle prattle.
