Section 5 - Chapter (Fasl)

Original content

English translation

But concerning passionate love ('ishq), the shaykhs have much discourse:

A group of that community deemed it permissible toward the Truth, but it is not permissible toward God Most High. They said: "Passionate love is an attribute of being barred from one's beloved; the servant is barred from the Truth, whereas God Most High is not barred; therefore passionate love from the servant toward Him is admissible, but from Him it is not permissible."

And again a group said: "Passionate love from the servant toward the Truth Most High is not permissible, because passionate love is a transgression of a limit, and God Most High is not bounded by any limit."

And again the later masters said: "Passionate love does not hold true in the two worlds except in seeking to perceive an essence, and the Essence of the Truth Most High cannot be perceived; and love (mahabba) holds true with respect to an attribute, so it must be that passionate love does not hold true toward Him."

And they also say: passionate love takes hold only through beholding a form, whereas love (mahabba) is admissible through hearing. Since it is a matter of sight, it is not permissible toward the Truth, for in this world no one sees Him. Since this is a matter of report, each one made his claim that in the discourse all are alike. Thus the Truth Most High is not perceived and sensed in His Essence, such that passionate love toward Him could hold true for creatures, whereas through His attributes and acts, as the Beneficent and the Bountiful, love toward the saints holds true. Did you not see that when love of Joseph, peace be upon him, overwhelmed Jacob, in the state of separation, when the scent of the shirt reached his brain his blind eyes became seeing? And when passionate love consumed Zulaykha, until she attained union with him her eyes did not recover their sight. This is one way; so it is a wonder that one nurtures desire and one casts desire aside.

And it has also been said: "Passionate love has no opposite, and the Truth Most High has no opposite, that it might be permissible toward Him."

And in this there are subtle chapters, but out of fear of prolixity I have contented myself with this measure, and God knows best.
