English translation

Know that repentance has no condition of confirmation, once the resolve not to return to disobedience is sound. If a penitent suffers a lapse and returns to disobedience without the soundness of the resolve of turning back, in those days already passed he had attained the ruling and reward of repentance.

Among the beginners and penitents of this group were those who repented, then suffered a lapse and returned to ruin, and then by the ruling of an admonishment came to the [divine] court; so that one of the shaykhs (may God have mercy on them) has said: 'I repented seventy times and returned to disobedience, until the seventy-first time I attained steadfastness.'

And Abu Amr al-Nujayd (may God be pleased with him) said: At first I repented in the assembly of Abu Uthman al-Hiri and remained upon it for a while. Then in my heart a solicitor of disobedience appeared, and I followed it and turned away from the company of this elder. Wherever I saw him from afar, I fled out of shame so that he would not see me. One day I suddenly came upon him. He said to me: 'O son, do not keep company with your enemies unless you are sinless; for the enemy sees your fault, and when you are faulty the enemy rejoices, and when you are sinless he grieves. And if you must disobey, come to us so that we may bear your affliction and you do not become the enemy's delight.' He said: my heart became sated with sin and my repentance became sound.

And I also heard that one of them repented from a disobedience and then returned to it. Then he became regretful. One day he said to himself: 'If I return to the [divine] court, how will my state be?' A heavenly voice called out: 'You obeyed Us and We thanked you; then you left Us and We granted you respite. So if you return to Us, We will accept you. You held Us in obedience and We thanked you; you acted unfaithfully and abandoned Us and We granted you respite. Now if you return in reconciliation, We will accept you.'

Now let us return to the sayings of the shaykhs, may God be pleased with them.
