Section 14 - Chapter

Original content

English translation

But as for what the masters have said concerning the self (nafs):

Dhul-Nun al-Misri, may God have mercy upon him, said: 'The most severe veil is the seeing of the selves and their contriving.' The most severe veil for the servant is the perception of the self and the following of its contrivance; for following it is opposition to God's good pleasure, and opposition to God is the head of all veils.

Abu Yazid, may God have mercy upon him, said: 'The self is an attribute that finds rest only in falsehood.' The self is an attribute whose repose is nowhere but in falsehood, and it will never leave it behind.

Muhammad ibn Ali al-Tirmidhi, may God have mercy upon him, said: 'You wish to know the Truth while your self remains within you, yet your self does not know itself; how then shall it know another?' You wish to know the Truth while your self endures within you, and your self, in the endurance of its own being, does not know itself—how then shall it know another? That is, the self, in the state of its own subsistence, is veiled from itself; and since it is veiled from itself, how shall it be unveiled to the Truth?

al-Junayd, may God be pleased with him, said: 'The foundation of unbelief is your standing upon the desire of your self.' The foundation of unbelief is the servant's standing upon the desire of his own self; for the self has no affinity with the subtlety of Islam, and inevitably it strives continually toward turning away, and the one who turns away is a denier, and the denier is a stranger.

Abu Sulayman al-Darani, may God have mercy upon him, said: 'The self is treacherous and obstructive, and the best of works is to oppose it.' The self is treacherous in trust and obstructive in the seeking of good pleasure, and the best of works is to oppose it; for treachery in trust is estrangement, and the abandonment of good pleasure is perdition.

And their utterances, may God have mercy upon them, on this meaning are more than can be enumerated. I have returned to the heart of my purpose and to the establishing of Sahl's doctrine concerning the soundness of striving against the self (mujahada) and its disciplining (riyada), and the manner of its exposition in reality. And with God is the granting of success.
