شاعری را به خواجه ممدوح
که بر او ریخت بدره های فتوح

روزی اندر میان نقار افتاد
هر دو را زان نقار کار افتاد

گفت خواجه که شرم باد تو را
زانچه گویی، نماند یاد تو را

زان همه زر که عاری از همه عیب
بارها ریختم تو را در جیب

گفت شاعر که راست می گویی
زین سخن راه راست می پویی

لیک زان غافلی که من کردم
که تو را قبله سخن کردم

شعر من هست مرغ فرخ فال
وز مدیح تو نامه هاش به بال

تو نشسته درون دروازه
کرده از تو جهان پرآوازه

زر که دادی به من خدای گواست
که ازان یک درم نمانده به جاست

آن رفیق هزار قافله رفت
وین ز راه شکم به مزبله رفت

زان فروزد سخن گزار چراغ
زین بسوزد به رهگذار دماغ

زان به سر تاج افتخارت ماند
زین به فرقم غبار غارت ماند

هر یکی را ذخیره چیست ببین
با دل تنگ و تیره کیست ببین

English translation

A poet and a praised patron, who had poured bags of gold upon him, one day fell into a dispute, and that dispute led to trouble between them. The master said, "Shame on you, for what you say; do you not remember all that gold, free from any blemish, which I poured into your pockets many times?" The poet said, "You speak the truth, and in these words, you tread the path of truth. But you are heedless of what I did: that I made you the focus of my speech. My poetry is an auspicious bird, carrying letters of your praise on its wings. While you sat inside the gateway, it made the world ring with your fame. As for the gold you gave me, God is witness that not a single dirham of it remains. That [gold] departed as a companion to a thousand caravans, and this [food] went through the stomach to the dunghill. From that [poetry], the speaker's lamp is lit, while from this [wealth], the brain burns along the way. From that, the crown of your glory remains on your head, while from this, only the dust of plunder remains on my head. See what is the lasting treasure of each, and see who is left with a narrow and dark heart."
