Original content

English translation

I am that bird whose snare is Your grain, The spell of my wildness is Your tale. You are the One who prepared the means of my work, You opened the door of blessing upon me. You bestowed dignity upon me by accepting my service, Elevating my head through the grace of prostration. Upon Your path, You ground my forehead to dust like kohl, And applied kohl to my path-seeing eyes. You opened my tongue to Your remembrance, And gave my heart the delight of remembering You. With sweetness and richness from my tongue, You placed a pleasant morsel in my mouth. No pain from chewing has reached the teeth, Nor has the throat suffered discomfort from eating it. In gratitude for that, grant me sweet speech, Deliver me from bitterness and grant me sweet actions. Do not turn my tongue toward speaking ill, Do not let my tongue become my loss. If a mistaken word should leap from my pen, From which questions and disputes might arise, Draw the line of forgiveness over that mistaken word, And do not throw my pen into conflict because of it. I am a plant nurtured by Your loyalty, Brought forth by You from water and clay. My head is inclined in every direction by desire, But my foot is stuck in the clay of Your alley. The mud that holds my foot in Your alley Is better than the flower that does not give Your color and scent. Make me single-hearted like a bud in this garden, And mark me with a single brand like the tulip. On this path, there is no harvest like single-heartedness; Being double-minded is nothing but fruitlessness. The single-kernel, smiling pistachio does not suffer The pain of the anvil like the double-kernel almond. When the ear of corn nurtures a hundred grains in its bosom, A blade strikes the head of every grain. Since the bud was single-hearted, it does not suffer Injury from the thorn even with a thousand daggers. If my sins exceed all bounds, Your grace is thousands of times greater than that. Even if I have two hundred harvests of sin, You can burn them with the lightning of my sigh. And if I have a hundred books of transgression, You can wash them away with the water of my weeping eyes. For every rosy-cheeked beauty to whom I turned my eyes, Now blood drips from my every eyelash. I wash the image of their faces from my eyes, And that is why red tears flow down my cheeks. If my gaze strove to disgrace me, My tears brought dignity back to my affairs. My two eyes are two rivers of repentance; This alone is sufficient for my honor on the Day of Resurrection. Perhaps I will gain some profit from this trade; Convey from me a blessing upon the Prophet.
