شعر چه بود نوای مرغ خرد
شعر چه بود مثال ملک ابد

می شود قدر مرغ ازو روشن
که به گلخن در است یا گلشن

می سراید ز گلشن ملکوت
می کشد زان حریم قوت و قوت

مستمع را ز فتح باب فتوح
می دهد کام جان و راحت روح

یا خود از گلخن هوا و هوس
می زند دم ز دودناک نفس

سامعان را ز ذکر لابه و لاغ
محنت خاطر است و رنج دماغ

گر بود لفظ و معنیش با هم
این دقیق و لطیف و آن محکم

صیت او راه آسمان گیرد
نام شاعر هم جهان گیرد

ور بود از طبیعت تاریک
معنی او کثیف و لفظ رکیک

نرود از بروت او بالا
پیش ریشش بماند آن کالا

شعر باید چو چشمه سار زلال
از عقود لآل مالامال

نشود آب او حجاب گهر
بلکه گردد ز آب تازه و تر

نه چو آن چشمه گل آلوده
که در او قعر آب ننموده

نتوانی در او گهر جستن
بل کزو دست بایدت شستن

لفظ او تیره معنیش تاریک
ره به معنی ز لفظ او باریک

تا به فکرت درون نرنجانی
نکنی فهم آن به آسانی

English translation

What is poetry? The song of the bird of intellect. What is poetry? The likeness of the eternal kingdom. The value of the bird becomes clear through it, Whether it is in the furnace or the rose garden. It sings of the rose garden of the heavenly realm, Drawing power and sustenance from that sanctuary. By opening the door of spiritual victories, It gives the listener the soul's desire and the spirit's ease. Or, from the furnace of passion and desire, It blows a breath full of smoke. For the listeners, from its mention of pleading and vanity, It brings distress to the mind and trouble to the brain. If its words and its meaning are together— The former precise and delicate, the latter firm and strong, Its fame will ascend to heaven, And the name of the poet will fill the world. But if it springs from a dark nature, Its meaning coarse and its words vulgar, It will not rise above his mustache, And that merchandise will remain right in front of his beard. Poetry should be like a crystal-clear spring, Overflowing with necklaces of pearls. Its water should not become a veil over the pearl, But rather, the pearl becomes fresh and moist from its water. Not like that muddy spring, Where the bottom of the water is not visible. You cannot search for pearls in it, But rather you must wash your hands of it. Its wording is murky, its meaning dark, And the path from word to meaning is narrow. Unless you torment your inner thoughts, You will not easily understand it.
