Original content

English translation

How fortunate is the king who, in the prime of youth, Benefited from repentance like the elders. Though his lips were stained with wine at first, He eventually washed his lips with the water of repentance. The cup of wine, with all its joyful spirit, Remained dry-lipped, far from his assembly. The wine vat kept its belly empty of the forbidden, Secluded in a corner like reputable ascetics. Deprived of the sanctuary of his banquet, The pitcher stands with a hand on its head in a hundred regrets. Although the decanter once held its head high because of him, It is now left with its hand open around its neck. When will the goblet follow the path of wine? For wine-measuring is no longer its task from now on. All animals possess eyes and ears; Reason and awareness belong exclusively to humans. Wine is the enemy of intellect, O intelligent one; Do not wish to see a friend vanquished by an enemy. If the world should sell half a barleycorn of intellect In exchange for two hundred harvests of pure gold of perfect assay, It is better for the wise to drink blood for a lifetime To buy that half barleycorn of intellect and wisdom, Rather than taking one or two sips of wine in hand And completely wasting the ready cash of knowledge, Stepping out of the boundaries of wisdom, And bringing one's baggage to the border of madness. For ages you drank wine and lost your senses, Becoming a slave to the command of good and evil. From all that wine-drinking and cheerful heart, What is your harvest but fruitlessness? Even if you drink like that for another hundred years, You will hardly find anything other than this. Know the pleasure of yesteryear that you experienced, And measure the coming year accordingly.
