Section 56 - Encouragement towards Seeking Manners and Encouragement towards the Manners of Seeking

Original content

English translation

Discipline the soul, O companions The paths of love are entirely manners The capital of eternal fortune is manners The foundation of the intellect's elevation is manners There is nothing but manners in the heart of the Abdal (Saints) There is no custom but manners for the people of perfection What are manners? Fulfilling the dues of servitude Standing firm upon the boundaries of God Words and deeds, hearing and seeing Weighing them on the scales of the religious law With God and creation, the Sheikh, friend, and companion Traversing the path according to its requisites The movements of the limbs and organs Aligning them with the decree of the religion of guidance The passing thoughts of the mind and illusions Purifying them entirely from the taint of the ego In fulfilling the limits without alteration Being far from both exaggeration and shortcoming Neither adding anything through excess Nor diminishing anything through negligence Religion and Islam consist in seeking manners Disbelief and rebellion arise from the ill omen of ill manners Listen to the tale of the Christians Who, when they made Jesus their Qibla Exaggerated his status to such a degree That they sacrificed religion and faith for him Suddenly it sprang from the core of their souls "That the Messiah, son of Mary, is the son of God" . . . . . . He spoke words in praise of Ali That would not come except from liars The worth of Ali is higher than that For understanding to reach . . . there What greater shame could there be for Ali himself Than being praised by a handful of the base? Do not say base, rather much baser than the base In deficiency, more deficient than the least of the least All of them carrying rejection upon rejection According to the Hadith of the Prophet and the explicit text of the Prophet
