Section 68 - His Going Up to the Roof, May His Secret Be Sanctified, Every Evening, and Addressing the Sun

Original content

English translation

They also relate from him that at the end, When this pain became too much for his heart, As the face of the sun turned pale, The Sheikh of religion would go to the edge of the roof. He would shed tears like piercing pearls, Turn toward the sun and say: 'O world-traveling, sky-measuring wanderer, Who diminishes the dark night and increases the day! From early dawn when, from the mountain peak, You rose with a thousand glories and majesty, Until now, when from your running and striving, You face the land of separation with a pale face. You saw drawn swords under your feet, You crossed high mountains, Many deep deserts, one after another, You traversed with a single warm disc. Over many seas in a golden boat, You passed without getting wet by the waves; Village by village, mountain by mountain, city by city, All received a share of the light of your grace. Did you see a broken-hearted soul anywhere? Did you see anyone delivered from self and creation, Who had a pain in their heart from this grief, Or any dust from this path upon their face?' He would speak many such words, Until the sun vanished from sight. After that, he would come down from the roof, Still restless and without peace. The restlessness of an unbridled love Has no comfort save in death. Nay, those who are intoxicated by this cup, Even when they die, they find no rest.
