English translation

One leaps away from all the world, To escape the harm of those who go astray. He shuns their benefit and harm, So that he may not see a spark of their evil. He flees from the people in secret and in public, So that he may live safe from sparks and evils. Oh, how many a person gathered a harvest, And suddenly a spark leaped and burned it. Friends, who are supposedly well-wishers, Are robbers of days and reducers of life. With trickery and deceit, they turn the days of your life Into an instrument for beasts and gear for demons. Sometimes they make you a companion of beasts, And sometimes they throw you into the demon's trap. A wise man has pierced the gem of wisdom and said: 'A bad snake is better than a bad friend.' A bad snake only winds around the body, But a bad friend tears up reason and faith from their roots. If you throw a stone at a bad snake, It leaps a league away from your house. Escaping from a bad friend is difficult; If you close the door, he enters through the wall. A bad snake, except through long ages, Does not appear inside the dwelling and house. It is easy to beware of it, And to rescue the coin of life from its palm. A bad friend, through spells and fairy tales, Is your bedfellow and housemate. How can one escape his cunning, Or with this foot flee from his bonds? When you see a bad snake, you know it; But you cannot recognize a bad friend. How much heart's blood must be consumed, Until the essence of a man becomes revealed! A bad snake is the enemy of this world, But a bad friend is the eternal enemy. The hostility that the people of Hell show Is all due to the effort and ignorance of the friend. The strong one strives out of ignorance and blindness, So that the weak one does not take the path of loyalty. The weak one obeys and the strong one remains; Due to this obedience, he becomes lost and strayed. It would have been proper had that one opposed this one, And in agreement with this, followed the inclination of religion. Since both became friends with each other, They became eternally humiliated and wretched. When the cycle of this world ends, They will all disassociate from one another. Drowned in fire in their limbs and organs, 'Some of them shall curse others.' The leaders seeking the torment of the followers, Saying: 'No welcome to them!' The followers in dispute with them, Chanting the litany: 'No welcome to you!' The seeker of tyranny biting his hands, saying: 'Oh, if only I had openly followed the path of the Prophet!' 'If only I had not taken so-and-so as a friend, And had not grieved the heart of a world.' This speech is pure from the taint of self-interest; Go read from the Quran: 'And the day when [the unjust one] shall bite [his hands].' Keep away from those who are distant from the door of God; Choose the path of migration from the abandoned ones. For, easy distance from their evil Is not achieved except through solitude.
