Original content

English translation

When the Book and Messenger arrived from God, That one brought progress and this one acceptance. Out of corruption and extremism, The disbelievers did not knock on any door but stubbornness and arrogance. 'And indeed there has come to them of information,' They denied it and followed their whims. They said, 'The truth of this is not clear, To us we do not think except a conjecture.' 'It is surely the fables of the ancients, Rather, an ancient lie and clear magic.' The believers turned their faces to the Prophet, Saying, 'We hear and we obey.' Believing in all his words, All his rulings being pleasing to them. 'They believed' was engraved on the tablet of their hearts, 'They did righteous deeds' was their outward conduct. Making a capital out of 'and give zakat', And an ornament out of 'and establish prayer'. They reined in the unruly horse of the carnal soul, And made a snare out of 'and complete the fast'. Having traversed the valley of 'perhaps' and 'if only', They became resolute in their intention of the pilgrimage to the House. All their actions in accordance with revelation, All their stillness in accordance with intellect. Constantly, in stillness and in motion, They made good ethics a second nature. On the Day of Resurrection, due to the deep-rootedness of those habits, They will see all goodness and blessings. The degrees of Paradise, houris, and palaces, Drink of ginger or camphor, Acacia and thornless lote-trees, layered and stripped, Outpouring water and extended shade, Those carpets, and cushions, and cups, And thrones, and youthful companions of equal age, Abundant fruits, never-ending, Which will not be forbidden to those who deserve them. And other prepared things, Which have never crossed the human heart. Likewise, all that opposes these, Of the depths of the Fire and what is in it. All these were ethics and spiritual states, The effect of actions originating from the doers. God, Mighty and Majestic, made them In the other abode the reward of actions. What were hidden meanings here, Became manifest entities there. What were fleeting accidents here, Became complete substances there. You assume them to be pebbles here, But you will find them as pearls and corals there. In this realm, a small and worthless stone, But in that realm, a grand, precious jewel. This is the state of the disbeliever and the Muslim, In this narrow, dark world.
