English translation

Truth has two active Names, Each having many manifestations. The manifestation of one is opposite to the other: One calls toward disbelief, the other toward religion. Those two Names are 'The Guide' (Al-Hadi) and 'The Misleader' (Al-Mudill); I have spoken openly so that the problem may be resolved. The manifestation of that one is the Prophet and his followers, The manifestation of this one is Iblis and his cohorts. That one guides to truth and correctness, While this one leads to disbelief and veiling. That one calls you to proximity and closeness, While this one drives you to distance and darkness. The face of that one is in guarding the inner heart, The face of this one is in constructing the outer appearance. The seeking of refuge (Isti'adhah) which your Lord commanded In the recitation of the Quran: Firstly, it is that through the path of the heart, You turn to 'The Guide' from the Name 'The Misleader'; Lay the head of humility upon the dust of need, Saying: 'You are the Arbiter of affairs, make my affair right; Do not wear me down under the decree of 'The Misleader'; Be mine, so that I may find rest.' Secondly, it is that in the path of outward form, The self (nafs) and the devil do not make you proud; Wherever you see any misguidance, Pull your skirt completely away from it; And wherever you find any guidance, Turn the face of your determination toward it. Thirdly, it is that you utter these blessed words With your tongue in absolute sincerity, So that the tongue, like the other limbs and pillars of the body, Seeks refuge in accordance with the heart; Not that you say 'I seek refuge' (a'udhu) and then run swiftly Toward Satan and the inciting self, Nor that you say 'I seek refuge' and then turn your face Toward those of evil character and unpleasant temper. As long as your reins are not held back from every evil, Not a single 'I seek refuge' of yours is 'I seek refuge in God.' Rather, in the eyes of the master of gnosis, It is nothing but 'I seek refuge in Satan.' Sometimes you say 'I seek refuge' and sometimes 'There is no power [except in God],' Yet your action belies your words. At your mouth is a cup of death-blending poison, While on your tongue you say: 'I am abstaining!' How long will you remain in trickery and deceit, The dwelling of the devil and the mockery of Iblis? He drives you toward himself at full gallop, While on your tongue he recites 'I seek refuge'! What a strange situation: that the foreign thief Has become the companion of the houseowner, And like him, cries out and wails, From door to door, street to street: 'Catch the thief!' Learn seeking refuge from that beggar: When the dog of a Turk becomes aggressive, He flees from the dog, And heads toward the kind-hearted Turk. He throws himself into his tent, And makes him aware of his helplessness, Crying: 'For God's sake, come to my aid, Otherwise the dog will uproot me entirely!' When the Turk sees his weak state, And witnesses his weeping and supplication, He gives him refuge in his neighborhood, And sends him on his way safe from the dog.
