English translation

Chief of chieftains, crown of the free, Commander of the host of the messengers.

The Abtahi moon, the Yathribi luminary, Around whom that one is the East and this one the West.

By the decree of the Sacred Law, foundation of the Path, By the light of the Path, knower of the Reality.

Obeyed by the world and obedient to God, Intercessor for the captives of the Day of Requital.

Muhammad, whose light is the candle of eternity-without-beginning, The Pen's first letter is his decree.

The treasure of existence was opened through him, His heart became the storehouse of the jewel of secret.

The intellect thirsts for the bounty of his teaching, Drawing drops from the spring of his 'mim.'

When he became the candle of this green lamp, He summoned Gabriel to be his moth.

The Possessor of the glorious Throne placed in his hand A key from the finger of his rosary-reciting.

With that key he unlocked the casket of the moon, And by radiant miracle displayed a jewel.

The dark night of unbelief, like a raven's feather, He kindled with that night-illuminating jewel.

He was performing, in the realm of intimacy, With his prophethood a Solomon, his signet a seal.

Like a seal-ring in this turquoise-colored vault, He therefore kept a stone bound upon his breast.

When he became distinguished by the Seal-hood of prophecy, From that seal came the mark upon his shoulder-blade.

Like a signet that grips its gemstone with the teeth, The stone of his foes became joined to his teeth.

When that stone became companion to his Canopus, From his reflection it took on the hue of carnelian.

If from his speaking ruby it did not turn its beads, How then did it become a rosary-reciter in his palm?

Behold that lip of miraculous melody, That makes the very stone recite the rosary.

His pure body was far from the darkness of any shadow, The earth was drowned in light from the glow of his face.

He begrudged casting a shadow upon the carpet of dust, So he cast his shadow upon the pure Throne.

His station passed beyond the highest heaven, So that the Throne might find repose in his shadow.
