English translation

When the reed of the pen became celebrated In sounding the melody of God's Oneness, It composed another heart-opening whisper, And struck up the tune of the Prophet's praise. Now, as it shortens that melody, It turns to sing the praises of the King— The King of noble lineage and sea-like generosity, For whose pearl the sky itself is but a shell; The protector of the world's sanctuary from trials, Crushing the skulls of the instigators of strife. His heart, with his sword, has cleansed the page of time From the imprint of sorrow and regret; His counsel raised the banner of Jamshid, His canopy cast its shadow over the sun. His hand is a cloud that rains pearls, Nay, like the sun, it scatters gold. If the meadow is filled by the cloud of his hand, Each flower becomes a platter of pearls; And if he showers gold upon the plane tree in his bounty, Its hand becomes a fistful of dinars. The host of his enemies, who are helpless, Are but a handful of chaff, clutching one another. When the lightning of his poisoned wrath strikes, Their smoke rises beyond the blue sky. The cause of the oppressed is set right by him, By him is oppression banished from the horizons. Before this, many grand treasures of wealth Were not disbursed by the measure of generosity; But now that his justice is legendary in the world, It restrains waste, like the justice of Umar. His name is that jewel of the crown of the throne For which the ocean of my discourse is too narrow. See from pre-eternal grace this honor of his, That like him, his name is precious: A being who attained dignity from sovereignty, The crown is of the Sultan, and the essence is of Husayn. O you, to whom intellect has given eternal beauty, And a fair name was designated since pre-eternity! The coin bears the sermon through your title, And the sermon is established by the coin in your name. The good and evil of the world are all but the rind; That which is the kernel within it is a good name. Open your eyes from this rind toward the kernel; The kernel is excellent, so incline toward the excellent. You have become renowned across sea and land; Become even more celebrated through greater goodness of name. When the cup of your joy becomes your support, Pour a draft upon the earth for the empty-handed. The pure-hearted lovers who are all as your dust Are nurtured by a draft of pure wine. You are both the hoarder of treasure and the scatterer of treasure; You are both the crown-giver and the crown-taker. The collyrium of the world's eye is the dust of your threshold, The collar of life is the ring of your waist-belt. The arena of speech is exceedingly narrow; How can anyone traverse the path of your praise? How could words ever have the capacity To serve as the vessel for measuring your praise? When the ocean of meaning raises its waves, The spring of words is tight in its capacity. When a jug begs from the ocean, It is clear what the ocean can put into a jug. Since this purpose cannot be fully achieved, It is better that I turn my whispers to prayers: Every dawn, as long as the morning-splitting sky Draws the sword of the sun from its sheath, May the head of your envier be split by you, And may he be afflicted and tormented day and night; May your desire be attained in the garden of hope, While his soul is scorched by the brand of death.
