English translation

I will tell who is another of that group: He who lived with obsessive doubts in every deed. In the path of religion, his duty is nothing Except obsessive doubt in prayer and ablution. He does not look toward a water jug or pitcher, He does not perform ablution except in running water. And what running water! It must be a sea, With a deep bottom and a wide expanse. The coin of religion in Medina and Mecca Received its mint from the hands of the evaluators. There were no such streams there Whose depth and requirement were like a sea. Thus, the ablution of the Messenger and his noble companions Was not 'complete' like our ablutions?! Washing the face, hands, and feet once Was made obligatory in the chosen Sharia. To perfect it, washing two more times Became a Sunnah through the Prophet's practice. What is a fourth or fifth washing then? What is it other than the obsessive doubt of human devils? If someone says to him, 'Do not be wasteful; Wastefulness is not the character of the noble,' He offers the excuse, 'I am on the bank of a stream, It is not wastefulness, no matter how much I wash.' Though there may be no waste in running water, There is waste in the currency of your lifetime, O ignorant one! It is a pity for this precious commodity To be spent on the obsessive doubts of the devil. A body contaminated with the filth of impurity Is better than useless obsessive doubts. Devil-natured is anyone who seeks obsessive doubts; Blessed is he who washed his heart from obsessive doubts. Why do you wash your face and beard so much, As if you are caught up in impurity? Since the method of washing is strictly by the Prophet's Sharia, Transgressing beyond it is the height of ill manners. God established that form of the Sharia So that the habit of base nature would be humbled. When you bind the work of Sharia to your personal nature, You pack up and depart from the street of Sharia. If you are not ruled by your own opinion, Why do you weave around your own desire so much? You make personal nature the leader of Sharia; You make Sharia, which is the root, a mere branch! Self-pleased, captive to a hundred obsessive doubts, You guard your body from every speck and stain, You would fill your eyes with dust and chaff Rather than allow a speck of dust on the back of your foot.
