Section 15 - On the Absolute Virtue of Speech, in Whose Virtue There is Absolutely No Dispute

Original content

English translation

The foremost breeze of the garden of speech Is the wind that adorns the meadow of divine creation. When that breeze arose at dawn, It adorned both the wet and dry of this meadow. From that first breath, the Pen emerged, Raising its head from the reed-bed of non-existence. Although the Pen has done justice to speech, Without speech, it too was born of speech. Since it was born of speech, it took up speech, It lifted the veil from this mystery of speech. Speech is the drawer of the veil over secrets, The reviver of dead voices. The melody of the storytelling minstrel Would be dead without soul-increasing speech. When his instrument becomes a companion to speech, His voice gives soul to his companions. Whoever proves that breath is the soul, The soul of that breath is nothing but sweet speech. Breath is the body, and speech is its soul; Hear this breath from those who are living of heart. Although speech is but knots of wind, See within its knots a hundred openings of pearls. Every knot of it is a pearl, nay, even better, Within that pearl, another knot is tied. If a letter goes under or over, To the intellect, that knot is nothing but a jewel. Speech is not bound to this sound and letter; The bird of speech has a wondrous melody. Whatever secret of it falls into your heart, A new meaning will be attained by you from it. To the master of speech, all that is speech; All of that is like the body to the soul of speech. Therefore, those who are aware of the mystery Have called the world the Words of Allah. For through it, the messenger of the Unseen from within Delivers the hidden secrets to the outside. The sweet-voiced minstrel plays with it; The turquoise dome of heaven is full of echo from it. Arise and enter the flower-garden; Open the seeing eyes of the narcissus a little. For the sake of an ear that understands secrets, See the flower's mouth open like the bud's lip. The noble lily is tongue in tongue, The early-rising bird is wailing in wailing. All are revealers of secrets and meanings, All are presenters of the hidden treasure. All of this is true, but of humankind, None has knocked at the door of intimacy more closely. The discovery of realities is through his tongue; The resolution of subtleties is from his speech. Although the harp of speech found many tunings, From his breath, it found the melody of miracles. When I tested the gold of speech's purity, Why should I bear the burden of shame from golden speech? If, like the heavens, you set up a scale And place the gold of the moon and sun on one side, And fill the other pan with the shell of pearls, And fill it with speech as precious as pearls, The gold will prove lightweight, rising to the skies, While the precious pearl of speech will not budge from its place. O Jami, if you possess a jewel, Withdraw your feet from going to every door. Do not cast greedy eyes on the gold of every base person; Like a seashell, be content with your own pearl.
