Section 36 - On the Description of His Generosity, Liberality, Bestowal, and Bounty

Original content

English translation

He had a hand like the sea in generosity and magnanimity, Nay, rather his hand was a sea from the ocean of bounty. From the grace of that cloud of generosity, The realm of the world would be filled with dinars and dirhams. Lessen his comparison to the sea, for the sea casts pearls Out of its palm, whereas this shell [his hand is the true source]. The hand of his generosity was more magnificent than a cloud; For the cloud bestows drops, while he bestows purses of gold. When I wished to adorn the assembly of his generosity, I desired to compare him to Ma'n and Hatim. But next to him, without any dispute, Ma'n would be deemed a miser, and Hatim stingy. So much did his hand possess an open, giving nature, That his fingers turned away from closing their face. Even if his fingers had wished to clench his palm, They would not bend their back into his fist. If a beggar passed by his door, Whose heart had turned to blood from the cruelty of poverty, He would shower so much favor and bounty upon him, That the beggar would run away, fleeing from the heavy weight of it.
